The Very Popular Creative Studio is a new program established to foster and support the development of new theatre works in our region. It aims to nurture local culture and to develop new Australian voices for the stage.
The program seeks to recognise new talent, act as a stepping stone for emerging artists and support the careers of established theatre-makers.

The program will offer independant artists/groups the opportunity to become a Resident Artist, providing access to resources and supporting infrastructure to help develop their project or idea.
​
In partnership with Hunter Drama’s Actor’s Company, this program will provide the Resident Artist with a platform to undertake workshops to develop their project, with an opportunity to present their work in the annual artistic season of the company. Resident Artists will become a vital component to the fabric of the company, as they attend Opening Nights; get behind-the-scenes peeks at all of the shows in our annual season; and help to shape future seasons.

The Very Popular Creative Studio aims to support new theatre works from their earliest stages through to the final goal of staging the production in one of Newcastle’s professional theatres. Individually tailored to meet the specific needs of each project, the program may incorporate regular workshops in the studio with a group of actors developing concepts and ideas, refining ideas into a script, testing the scenes with actors, or staged readings of the work. The program may also result in the realisation of a full staged production of their creative work.

Supporting the Creative Studio is a 3 year commitment of $4000 annually, which can be made individually or in a group. Donors follow the development of artists and their work, from its earliest stages through to the final goal of a production on one of Newcastle’s professional stages.

The Very Popular Creative Studio is a 3 year program for the successful applicant. Year one incorporates regular workshops where the successful applicant will spend time in the studio with a group of actors developing their concept and ideas. Year two is spent focussing their ideas into a script and testing the scenes with their actors. Year three may involve the realisation of a full staged production of their creative work. The process may also result in staged readings depending on the evolution of their creative studio time.

The financial contribution from Creative Studio Makers allows the use of workshop and rehearsal venues, access to the company of actor's from Hunter Drama, as well as production infrastructure and admin support for each project.
